Chomp Chomp Food Centre: The Post-Renovation Guide To Serangoon Gardens Supper Spot
Chomp Chomp Food Centre reopened on 27 January 2026 after a three-month renovation under the National Environment Agency's hawker centre upgrading programme. The centre, first opened in 1972 at the heart of Serangoon Gardens Estate, was closed from 27 October 2025 to 26 January 2026 for repairs, redecoration, and maintenance.
The upgrades are visible the moment you walk in. Six large fans now improve ventilation, which matters when the BBQ stalls are going at full tilt on a Saturday night. New canopies over the dining areas keep you dry during rain, non-slip tiles make the pathways safer, and handrails have been added for elderly diners. The toilet and sink areas have been redesigned, and 10 new seats have been added to the seating capacity.
What To Order: The Classic Lineup
Chomp Chomp is best known for a specific set of dishes, and the stalls that serve them have been here for decades. Ang Sa Li Satay at stall #32 does chicken, beef, and pork satay from 4:30pm to 11pm daily. A stick costs $0.70, and the minimum order is 10 sticks. The peanut sauce here is thicker and sweeter than what you get at Lau Pa Sat.
Chong Pang Chicken Wings at stall #28 is the BBQ chicken wing stall. Wings cost $1.40 per piece with a minimum order of two, and they are marinated with a secret recipe before being grilled over charcoal. The skin turns glossy and dark at the edges, and the meat stays juicy. They sell out by 10pm on weekends.
Hai Wei Yuan BBQ at stall #01 is the first stall you see when you enter, and it is the best of the three BBQ seafood stalls here. Sambal stingray costs $12, served on a banana leaf with sliced onions. The sambal is spicy, the meat is fresh, and on weekends you will wait at least 30 minutes for your order.
The Noodle And Carrot Cake Stalls
Ah Hock Fried Hokkien Mee at stall #27 is the noodle stall, open from 5pm to midnight daily. A plate costs $5, $6, or $8, and it comes with yellow noodles and bee hoon soaked in a flavourful gravy, topped with prawns, squid, and pork belly. Ang Mo Kio 409 Fried Carrot Cake at stall #24 does both black and white versions from 4pm to 11:30pm, closed on Mondays.
Chomp Chomp Rojak and Popiah at stall #36 is the stall for rojak, the local fruit and vegetable salad with a sticky, sweet, and spicy prawn paste dressing. A portion costs $3, $4, or $5. The popiah, fresh spring rolls filled with stewed turnip and peanuts, costs $2 for two pieces.
When To Go
Chomp Chomp comes alive in the evenings. Most stalls open from 4:30pm onward, and the mood builds after sunset. For fewer crowds, come shortly after opening, around 4:30pm to 5:30pm. For stronger atmosphere, come later in the evening. The smoke from the BBQ stalls, the noise of orders being called out, and the shared-table seating make it feel like a lived-in dining experience rather than a polished one.
The nearest MRT is Lorong Chuan (CC14), but the walk takes about 20 minutes. Buses 73, 136, 315, and 317 serve the area from Serangoon Gardens. If you are carrying camera gear or coming with a group, ride-hailing is easier.
