Hougang oyster omelette stall plans to retire by December. The couple still want a successor

Ong Lim Chong and Lim Suan Eng, 王连宗 and 林碹英, say they will stop the woks at 435A Hougang Avenue 8 by the end of December 2026. The stall is the one the sign still spells Houogang Oysterly and Fried Kway Teow. 8world's vibes desk spent a morning there on 28 September. The couple were already talking about a successor, not a last-day countdown.

They have been at this for about 40 years. Night markets first, then Hougang coffeeshops, self-taught. He used to cook in an army camp. She sold fruit with her father and learned the kway teow from him. He does the orh luak. She does the fried kway teow. Their children have jobs and do not want the stall. AsiaOne, repeating the same interview, used the English names. The Chinese page is the one that has the prices and the hand surgery.

The plates, not the legend

Orh luak is $6 small and $7 large. Fried kway teow is $4.50 and $5. They also fry prawn omelette and cockle omelette. 8world watched a weekend pace of about 200 plates of each signature. The queue starts before the shutters lift. Hours on the board and in that piece are 11am to 5.30pm or until the wok empties, Wednesday to Sunday. Monday and Tuesday they rest.

The orh luak is the crispy-edge kind, thin starch, coriander, a homemade chilli that is more sour than sweet. The oysters are large. Seth Lui's older review called them Korean and thumb-sized. Eatbook said pork lard is what you smell first. I am not going to pretend I stood in that queue this week. Those are the plates the 2026 photos show, and they match what regulars have said for years.

The kway teow is the wetter Hougang style. Yellow noodles and kway teow together, bean sprouts, fishcake, lap cheong, clams. She told 8world the fire has to be enough and you cannot rush it. He would not name the seasoning mix. Fair.

Why December, and what happens after

He is 70. Long years on the wok wore the bones in his hands. The left hand already had surgery. The right hand is next. He told 8world he would still cook if the surgeon had not said so. She talked about customers who notice when they miss a day, and about one regular who eats kway teow most mornings and buys orh luak at new year for his mother. That is the part that makes a retirement feel like a neighbourhood fact, not a food-blog headline.

They have put the word out for a successor. They will teach someone with wok experience. They will not hand the recipes to a stranger and walk away the same week. As of the late-September interview, nobody had taken it. If that person appears in November, the stall may not vanish in December. If it does not, December is the last month of this couple on these two woks. Plan as if the second thing is true, then check the shutters.

The unit is a coffeeshop under block 435A, near Punggol Primary, on the Hougang Avenue 8 stretch that sits between Hougang town and Buangkok. It is not Kovan 209 and it is not Ci Yuan. HardwareZone regulars still call it the stall beside the primary school car park. Buangkok MRT is the cleaner walk. Hougang MRT plus a bus along Avenue 8 also works. It is not MUIS-certified. Pork lard, lap cheong, oysters.

They have not left Singapore for about ten years. The trip they want is ordinary. That is the whole story. Go on a Wednesday if you hate queues. Go hungry. Do not treat a 70-year-old's hands as a photo opportunity.
