Hippopotato has a shop. The Tampines home kitchen that sold rosti out of a mother's executive flat now sits at Northshore Plaza I, 榜鹅北岸广场, #02-41, 407 Northshore Drive, Singapore 820407. Brothers Gary Wong and James Wong opened around 15 October 2026. Seth Lui's writer Yi Xuan ate there on opening week and updated the review on 19 October. The Tampines home-based counter is paused until the Punggol shop can run without the family kitchen behind it.
Hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11am to 3pm and 5pm to 9pm. Closed Monday. Phone +65 8861 2497. Instagram is hippopotato.sg. Takeaway orders go through take.app/hippopotato. Seth Lui puts a meal at $8 to $16 a head if you copy what they tried.
From a Tampines flat to a plaza unit
James used to work the rosti station at Marche. The family ran a cai fan stall at a junior college and let that lease die in May 2026 to concentrate on potatoes. Vulcan Post sat with Gary and his wife Yiying Tan in July 2026, while this was still a home business. They were moving 100 to 150 rostis a day, about $30,000 to $35,000 a month, on Russet potatoes, from a 1,500 sq ft flat the family shares in Tampines. The physical shop was the stated next step. Northshore Plaza I is that step.
Seth Lui counted 516 Google reviews at 5.0 stars on 16 October, still pointing at the home listing. Eatbook's March 2026 home-cafe write-up had them on Tampines Street 45, Block 497A, evenings Wednesday to Friday, Saturday lunch and dinner. That address is the one now on pause. Do not turn up in Tampines expecting a doorbell rosti. The work has moved to Punggol.
What leaves the griddle
Golden Classic Rosti is $8. Opening week sold the first 50 a day at $5 from 15 to 18 October. That promotion is over. Order it as a made-to-order cake, crisp outside, soft potato inside. Sour cream is the usual topping. Yi Xuan wanted a heavy spoon of it.
Okonomirosti is $10.50. Okonomiyaki sauce, Japanese mayonnaise, and a pile of bonito flakes sit on the same potato base. That was the favourite on the Seth Lui visit. Mentaiko Mayo Tater Tots are $5. Extra sauce on the side is $0.30. The kitchen also lists fries and other potato sides. Nothing on the reviewed plate was a $20 mains. This is a snack-and-lunch counter, not a dinner reservation.
The brothers said on Instagram that food has always been a big part of their DNA. Fine. The useful fact is the split shift. Lunch 11am to 3pm, then a two-hour close, then 5pm to 9pm. Arrive at 3.30pm and the shutter is down. Northshore Plaza I is a neighbourhood mall, not Waterway Point. Haidilao's old smart outlet in this plaza is long gone. You come here for the rosti, maybe a supermarket run, then you leave.
Samudera, not Punggol MRT
Samudera LRT on the Punggol West loop is the stop. Northshore Drive is a walk from the LRT, not a walk from Punggol interchange. If you are already at Waterway Point, this is a separate trip along the Northshore stretch, past the new flats, not a downstairs detour. Buses that run Northshore Drive are the easier option from Punggol MRT if you do not want the LRT hop.
I would go for the Okonomirosti and the tots, skip the $5 opening myth, and treat Monday as closed. If the lunch queue looks like the home-kitchen days, the 5pm reopening is the valve. Call 8861 2497 if you are dragging a group. The unit is #02-41. Look up, not at the first-floor supermarket pull.
