Ang Mo Kio Blk 409 Hawker Centre to Reopen 7 August After Two-Month NEA R&R
Residents of Teck Ghee are counting down to 7 August 2026, when the 409 AMK Market and Food Centre reopens after a two-month closure for NEA Repairs and Redecoration works. The hawker centre, also known as Teck Ghee Square, has been shut since 8 June, leaving over 35 cooked-food stalls and more than 90 market stalls out of operation through the middle of the school holidays.
The closure is an NEA-managed R&R round, the periodic upgrade that government-owned hawker centres undergo to fix wiring, plumbing, tiling and roofing. The next maintenance closure for Blk 409 is already listed on NEA's schedule for December 2026, but that is a shorter three-day cleaning rather than a full renovation.
What the closure has meant for the neighbourhood
Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 is unusual in having three hawker centres on the same road. Blk 453A (Chong Boon Market and Food Centre) and Blk 527 are both open during the Blk 409 closure, so residents have not been entirely without a nearby option. But Blk 409 is the largest of the three, and the one with the deepest roster of long-running stalls, so regulars have been making do with the smaller centres or travelling further.
The closure also prompted at least one retirement. Hup Seng Huat Cooked Food (#01-22), a wanton noodle stall run by the same Aunty for over 40 years, announced that 7 June would be her last day of business. Whether the stall reopens under new hands after the R&R is not yet confirmed.
The stalls worth queuing for on reopening day
If you are planning to visit in August, the stalls that draw the queues are:

- Xin Yun Seafood Fish Head Steamboat (#01-01) — the fish head hotpot stall for dinner groups
Opening hours for the centre are 6:30am to 10pm daily, with the market stalls starting earlier and the cooked-food stalls ramping up from late morning. The first week after a long R&R closure is usually busy, so expect longer queues than usual for the first few days as regulars return.
Why this reopening matters for the north-east
Ang Mo Kio sits in the north-east of our coverage area, and Blk 409 is one of the older-generation heartland hawker centres that still operates a full wet market alongside the cooked food. Centres like this, built in 1979, are where the bulk of everyday neighbourhood dining happens, and a two-month closure is long enough to shift regulars' habits. The reopening on 7 August means those habits can reset.
If you have not been to Teck Ghee Square before, the week after 7 August is a good time to go: the centre will be freshly painted, the stalls will be restocking, and the full roster should be back in operation.
